Of, relating to, or being in agreement with the Gospel, particularly as presented in the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John).

The first person to employ the word evangelical to denote a specific doctrinal tradition was Martin Luther, who used it to define those Christians who stressed justification "by faith alone" and who used the Bible as the final authority in contrast to the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical system, which allowed a place for tradition and good works along with faith
