Security chief denies turning visitors away on grounds of religion

Hong Kong did not deny entry to anyone during the Fortune Global Forum because of religion or affiliation with any group, Secretary for Security Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee said yesterday.
Falun Dafa, one of the organisations that held demonstrations during the forum, reported that 102 Falun Gong practitioners from overseas had been barred from entering the SAR. The deportations prompted statements of concern from the United States, Britain and Australia. However, Mrs Ip told a meeting of consuls general this week that ``refusal of entry ... was part of the overall security strategy''. Mrs Ip said the Director of Immigration had ``wide discretion'' over whether to permit entry of those who did not have right of abode. ``The director has exercised his power properly in all cases concerned. There was no question of `arbitrary' refusal or `refusal by inadvertence','' Mrs Ip was quoted as telling the consuls general. ``Refusal on a specific occasion does not necessarily mean that the same person will be refused landing again in the future.''
