Clerics' anti-gay remarks criticized

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS -- Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok has criticized anti-gay comments made by Muslim clerics as "very serious and extraordinarily hurtful," the Dutch news media reported.

The prime minister said the Cabinet would meet Muslim imams, or prayer leaders, to inform them that anti-gay comments were not proper in the Netherlands, which has been at the forefront in gay rights.

"They must be conscious of the norms and values that are fixed in Dutch law. With their words, the imams could intentionally or unintentionally incite violence against homosexuals," he said Friday.

Kok's comments followed statements a week ago from Rotterdam imam Khalil el-Moumni that homosexuality was a sickness that could destroy society.

Commentary:
Most Muslims who have settled in the Netherlands have adjusted well to life in a democratic, civilized country. However, some Muslims apparently believe they can engage in hate speech against Jews, homosexuals, unbelievers or others they disagree with. And that attitude is one thing the Dutch will not tolerate.

Several Muslims groups have distantiated themselves from the remarks made by the Imams.
