Entrance ceremonies marking the first term of the school year were held Friday at public schools nationwide as children began their new school lives.

Most of Tokyo's 1,356 public primary schools had entrance ceremonies, and about 90,000 children entered primary school in Tokyo this year.

In Ryugasaki, Ibaraki Prefecture, the 12-year-old daughter, eight-year-old son and seven-year-old son of Chizuo Matsumoto, leader of the Aum Supreme Truth cult, began to go to a local public primary school.

Even though they had initially been refused admittance to the school because of anti-Aum sentiments voiced by other students' parents, the city education board decided to accept them last month.
