A former deputy leader of the Scottish National Party who claims his life was blighted by false allegations of sex abuse brought by his daughter is suing a health trust and social workers over their handling of the case.

Jim Fairlie's action is thought to be the first court case in Britain attacking the widely discredited treatment known as ''recovered memory therapy''. He claims its use at the Murray Royal Hospital, Perth, resulted in his eldest daughter Katrina, who is now 30, accusing him of sexually abusing her as a child.

She also made allegations against 16 other men, including other relatives and two MPs who have never been named. But a police investigation resulted in a decision not to prosecute Mr Fairlie, 60, and his daughter later withdrew her allegations.

The hospital and the social work department question Mr Fairlie's description of his daughter's treatment as ''disclosure therapy'', and claim it was his daughter Sharon who wanted social workers and the police brought into the case.

The use of recovered memory therapy has resulted in a number of prosecutions in which people say they have been helped to recall sexual abuse that happened years before.

However, the British False Memory Society is in touch with 1,400 people in Britain who claim they have been falsely accused of sexual abuse after children were helped to ''recover their memories''.
