The publisher of Apologetics Index lives in De Jordaan, part of historic, downtown Amsterdam
Jordaan - This trendy quarter is 10 minutes from Leidseplein. Built in the late 1600 - early 1700s for the working class, it is now an enclave of boutiques, restaurants and artists lofts. The smaller side canals and streets are among the most picturesque in Europe.
Amsterdam is tiny. You can walk from the station to the Museum Quarter - one side to the other - in half an hour. Skip canal boat tours and bike tours, the city is best explored on foot. The following route covers the prettiest canals: from the station, take Brouwersgracht down to Prinsengracht, which skirts the hip Jordaan neighbourhood and is the liveliest of the Canal Ring's waterways, with plenty of "brown" cafes and antiques shops. First stop could be the scenic Noordermarkt (bric-a-brac on Monday mornings; organic food all day Saturdays). Turn up Leidsegracht, one of the city's smartest addresses, then right into Herengracht, soon lined with the haughty mansions of the Golden Bend. Next turn into Reguliersgracht: with curvaceous bridges every hundred yards and lopsided gabled buildings either side, the canal has launched a thousand travel brochures.

Amsterdam City Housing Department
So you've decided that Amsterdam is the perfect city for you, and you want to move here? Great! Now comes the hard part: finding a place to live. This is the place to start (and remember, miracles do happen...).
Amsterdam Heritage
Amsterdam enjoys great fame for being the proud owner of one of the most important intact historical city centres in the world. This site, presented by the government organization responsible for the preservation of monuments, provides a good overview, along with many wonderful photos.
Anne Frank House
"At the Anne Frank House in the center of Amsterdam you can find the hiding place where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary during World War Two. The original of the diary is on display as part of the Anne Frank House's permanent exhibition.
Visiting the Anne Frank House has been a moving experience for millions of people from all over the world. These pages will provide you with just a glimpse of what you can expect from such a visit."
Boom Chicago
Amsterdam as seen through the eyes of a group of American comedians (no kidding). Irreverent at times, but for the most part quite accurate. Goes a long way toward explaining why so many Americans move to Holland and settle here. (BTW: if you do visit or move to Amsterdam, be sure to visit the Boom Chicago theatre show. It's an excellent combination of fun and food.)
The Hip Guide To Amsterdam
One of the best Amsterdam guides online. Good descriptions. Nice pictures. Made by people who ''believe Amsterdam is one of the coolest places on the planet.'' I agree.
The Shelter
The Shelter City and The Shelter Jordan are two clean and comfortable Christian youth hostels in the heart of Amsterdam.
Popular with backpackers and budget travellers, these hostels offer inexpensive boarding (and great meals) in a warm and friendly hostel atmosphere. Over two decades ago, I (the publisher of Apologetics Index) worked at "The Shelter City." I know these hostels and the non-denominational Christian ministry that operates them. If you're planning on visiting Amsterdam, I heartily recommend a stay at one of the The Shelter hostels. (Note: I live right around the corner from Shelter Jordan. Should you stay there, feel free to drop me a line if you'd like to get together for a beer or some cappuccino at my local hangout.)
The Shelter City and Shelter Jordan also offer short-term (2 weeks-3 months) and long-term (6 months to a year) mission opportunities . As part of an international team of Christians between 18 and 30 years of age, you'll reach guests from around the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
