Discipling is the Biblical practice of Christians training other Christians (2 Timothy 2:2
 ).
However, this process is often taken to extremes by abusive churches and cultic movements. (The International Churches of Christ, which is a cult of Christianity is an extreme example). Discipling is also referred to as shepherding, after the movement that became known for its heavy-handed discipling practices. Thus while proper discipling is a Biblical practice, Christians contemplating involvement in a discipling situation - whether one-on-one or as part of a group - are encouraged to study materials on how to recognize spiritual abuse. 
 The Discipling Dilemma Online book by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr., Editor, Howard W. Norton, Don E. Vinzant, and Gene Vinzant. While specifically written with the International Churches of Christ in mind, it provides good insight in the basic issues regarding discipling.
