L. Ray Smith qualifies as a heretic due to his denial of the trinity. The trinity is essential because in order to be saved one must put their faith in Jesus Christ, the real Jesus. Non-trinitarians have their faith in a created Jesus, and one who is not God incarnate. Their faith is in the wrong Jesus. In order to be saved one must have their faith in the correct Jesus who is God incarnate, died on the cross for our sins, and literally rose from the grave three days later.

Now I want to talk about universal salvation and then give a warning to all of us. Universal salvation is a dangerous belief because it can lead people to postpone salvation until the afterlife, only when they get to the afterlife they will find that it's too late. Universalism comes in several different forms. There is Unitarian Universalism which is really just a belief that all will be saved combined with a rejection of the trinity. There is the Unitarian Universalist Association which is an organized cult based on unitarian universalism. Again, heretical because of their denial of the trinity. There is pluralistic universalism which teaches that all go to Heaven regardless of what they believe. This is heretical because of their denial of Jesus Christ as the only way to Heaven. There is one more form that I'd like to address before I give my warning. Conservative Trinitarian Universalism. They affirm the trinity, believe that salvation is only found through faith in Jesus Christ. The only problem is they believe all will eventually come to the saving grace of Jesus. Since many die each day without Jesus, conservative trinitarian universalists are forced to believe in afterlife repentance. They don't believe a person goes to Heaven without Jesus, they just believe that evangelism extends beyond the grave throughout the ages until everyone comes to know Jesus.

Now for my warning, and it may surprise you. Do NOT divide from conservative trinitarian universalists! No I do not believe in universal salvation, and yes I believe their belief in universal salvation is dangerous. However, salvation is by grace through faith in Christ alone. In fact, I will go as far as to say that we MUST maintain that a person can be saved while still believing in conservative trinitarian universalism. Here is why, if you say that belief in universal salvation will negate a person's salvation, then I believe you're on dangerous ground theologically. Why? Because basically what you are saying is "faith in Christ is not enough, you also have to believe in eternal torment." Therefore, you would be rejecting the essential doctrine of salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone. You have added the affirmation of a doctrine to faith in Christ. That is heretical. Also apologeticsindex claims that universalism is "heretical" yet they fail to explain which essential doctrine of Christianity is being denied, since heretical doctrines are only those that contradict essential doctrines. Apologeticsindex would do better to say "universalism is the heterodox...." Heterodox doctrines are false doctrines of significant error but not so much to make those affirming it nonchristians. I've studied universal salvation and have read the arguments in support of it, which do not hold up biblically. But I have found true believers who maintain the doctrine. Unfortunately L. Ray Smith is not one of them due to his denial of the trinity. But anyway, whatever true believing christians maintain as far as the fate of unbelievers, discuss it, disagree, affirm, but do not divide over this issue. That is heresy.

One verse I didn't see Mr Smith address was John 1:1. 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Later on the Word is described as Jesus. It states that the Word became flesh. Therefore God became flesh. In this form he was Jesus. It clearly states that THE WORD WAS GOD. If Jesus is the Word, which I think anyone reading chapter 1 of John will conclude, Then Jesus must be considered God. Since we are told that their is only One God, then it becomes apparent that Jesus is God in the flesh. Also saying because the word Trinity is not in the Bible so it can't be true is like saying the word rapture isn't in the Bible so That can't be true. I think anyone who reads 1 Thess 4:15-17 would agree that there will be a rapture.

The word 'Trinity' is indeed not found in the Bible. However, the concept clearly is. This study includes some 700 verses from Scripture that provide the Biblical basis of the doctrine of the Trinity.

What you propose is that the number 2-1/2 does not exist because your ruler only shows whole numbers.

Besides, have you ever heard of the incarnation? Do you believe it? If you don't you essential reject the doctrine that teaches the Word (God) became flesh. (John 1:1,14) Sure, the word itself is not in the Bible, but as with the Trinity, the concept clearly is.

The word atheism is not in the Bible either, and yet the Bible describes it (Ps. 14:1).

When you claim to follow God the Father and Jesus Christ his son, and claim you trust the Bible -- and yet foolishly reject what God himself has revealed in his Word about himself, it's not Jesus you are following. Rather, you are leaning on your own understanding -- and on the foolishness preached by people like L. Ray Smith.

Get rid of your pride, and knock yourself and your teachers of the pedestal. Then study to show yourself approved. The article I linked to above is a good place to start. It's a Scripture outline, so you'll work with the book you claim to trust.

By learning who God really is -- the way He has revealed himself -- you do yourself and others a huge favor.

The Bible is God's Word. God's Word is God's OWN revelation of Himself, and God' Word IS Jesus Christ. God's Word is Truth. God's Word is Spirit and Life. God's Word is the Perfect Image of God. God's Word is the means by which our Father in heaven restores us to Himself in a right relationship, as sons. Those who reject God's Word also reject God our Father who sent Him. Eternal Life is to know God our Father and Jesus Christ whom He sent. The ONLY Way to know Him is to receive His Word; who is Jesus Christ; the Way the Truth and the Life. God Himself placed no "other" requirement in His STATEMENT. I accept Jesus Christ; God's Word ALONE, and I receive His Holy Spirit which Jesus fills me with, and I KNOW My Father; God Almighty.
I reject words that are not God's Own Word, but would substitute (take the place of God's own Word; i.e. replace God's own Revelation; Jesus Christ, with some man-invented-word). Follow Jesus Christ; He IS the Word of God, and He will set you free from the lies and idolatry of men!

"TRINITY" is NOT God's Word. THAT IS the only PROOF needed. Jesus Christ; God's Word is the ONLY Truth, the ONLY Way to the Father, and He is the Life of men!

Louise rejects the doctrine of the Trinity on the basis of some vague (and false) information -- preferring to believe that the teaching is man-made. But in order for her to reject the doctrine of the Trinity, she would also have to reject the Bible, declaring it to be man-made as well.

Louise, get your mind off of L. Ray Smith and into the Word of God. This Biblical outline study of the doctrine of the Trinity is well-documented.

In regards to the subject of the trinity, i would just like to state that no person who truly believes in God would believe this document AT ALL. It is a man made document that (BEING BRUTALLY HONEST) Some random guy from the church decided to put together. How can anyone think that people are going to believe something that has not come from the lord??? The world is full of false prophets, and i truly believe that the heads of the churches are the WORST culprits. Because of this they have damaged peoples faith in god far more than any one man with a website could.

Thank you and God bless

As one out of I guess millions of Christ followers I want so much to believe in what is being taught to us by our ministers and priests. Fear of God and consequences for the fact that thru no fault of my own I was born and because I was born I am facing eternal damnation in some sort of hell place. What is this all about? I know God knows each and every one of us before even we are born and he knows about our fates even before we commit our first sin. There is the gift call "grace" but depending on where you are getting your teaching from the process differs so one can feel good for a time but really the worry about did you make the cut is always looming.I can't believe God created humanity, the universe and who know what else and he even said that it was good, but for whatever reason people could end up in the Christian HELL. Even hell (fire) or lost from (Christ) depending on who you learn from is mind boggling and a terrorizing trend of thought. Why would a loving, caring, gentle and thoughtfull God even think of creating something like I am a part of and then punish some or all of it for What? Being born? I know that the smooth talking ministers will say, öurs is not to reason why"or Adam and eve caused this"but to my humble opinion it just doesn,t add up. Does it? God is all powerful, he knows averything that has happened and every thing that will happen, if he knows someone like me is not going to make it to heaven, why not be loving and cancel out my birth? You see, it just doesnt make sence to us UNINFORMED pilgrims.

Please do not hold my incorrect grammer or missspelling against me.
                                 Thank You.. George

I am glad to find people that agree with my conclusion of Ray Smith. He does not state a doctronal position on his site but I concluded he was a Univeralist heretic. It is sad that the man will have to experience the fires of hell before he believes.

Offering to eat a hat if you are proven wrong is just plain silly. "I doubt if you will respond" makes you sound like a whiner. Such statements tend to be uttered by stubborn, manipulative people.

Not accepting the biblical doctrine of the Trinity is a sign that you are unregenerated, and thus likely not saved at all:

"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned." - 1 Cor. 2:14

The diety of Christ is a central, essential teaching of Scripture: http://www.apologeticsindex.org/159-chart-of-essential-doctrines-of-christianity

Sure you could quote scripture, but I am not surprised you don't do so. You are only looking for an argument, but are not committed enough to build your case. Instead you again whine ("you won't believe").

As it says at the Apologetics Index entry on the Trinity, "A person who claims the doctrine of the Trinity is false because the word "Trinity" is not found in Scripture is as foolish as someone who claims 3½ inches, or, say, 5¼ centimeters do not exist because his ruler only shows whole numbers. The doctrine of the Trinity is presented in Scripture clearly enough for spiritual people to recognize, and solidly enough for unspiritual people to stumble over."
http://www.apologeticsindex.org/t10.html

Your teacher, L. Ray Smith, is a heretic, and so are you. This is what the Bible calls those who reject sound doctrine.

The diety of Christ is a central, essential teaching of Scripture: http://www.apologeticsindex.org/159-chart-of-essential-doctrines-of-christianity

Sure you could quote scripture, but I am not surprised you don’t do so. You are only looking for an argument, but are not committed enough to build your case. Instead you again whine (”you won’t believe”).

As it says at the Apologetics Index entry on the Trinity, “A person who claims the doctrine of the Trinity is false because the word “Trinity” is not found in Scripture is as foolish as someone who claims 3½ inches, or, say, 5¼ centimeters do not exist because his ruler only shows whole numbers. The doctrine of the Trinity is presented in Scripture clearly enough for spiritual people to recognize, and solidly enough for unspiritual people to stumble over.”

Your teacher, L. Ray Smith, is a heretic, and so are you. This is what the Bible calls those who reject sound doctrine.

I have read quite a bit of Mr Smiths work, and others like his and I find it refreshing and consistent with Bible teaching. It amazes me that you folks concider anyone that does not tow the orthodox line a(heretic),well what a beautiful heresy it is. You preach that Trinity is foundation for ortodoxy, I beleive Christ is.
Show me any where in the Bible where it says that TRINITY IS ESSENTIAL TEACHINGS OF SCRIPTURE AND I WILL PHYSICALLY EAT ANY HAT YOU WISH. You can't show me because it is a man made, man agreed upon doctrine or creed, not of God. Your going by what you are scared into beleiving like so many others.
How you folks get so riled up at anyone declaring the absolute love of God for ALL mankind and the eventual salvation of ALL,is trully amazing. With one lip you declare the love of Christ and with the other you deny it.
I doubt if you will respond so I will leave it at that but God loves all His creation and He will be ALL in ALL. I could quote scripture with all I said, but you won't believe any way so I'll save some type. May God continue to bless you with greater understanding of His word and will.
