Manly Love

By David Kowalski

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her." (Ephesians 5:25 NASB)

Real love is a costly thing that requires real strength. Christ exhibited His love for the church by laying aside the glory he most certainly preferred (Philippians 2:3-8) and by enduring the hideous torment of the cross ("not as I will..." [Matthew 26:39]). In so doing, He modeled the kind of love with which a man is commanded to love his wife.

There is no room in manly love for domineering brutishness which is too weak to sacrifice preferences. Manly love lays down one's selfish desires out of an overriding desire to please the beloved. It is strong enough to be kind and tough enough to forgive. "Macho" men who insist on having their way in life's incidental matters and who think it manly to rule over a woman are nothing but childish weaklings. God's Word to such inward wimps is "...act like men, be strong" (1 Corinthians 16:13 NASB).
